Top Tips for Healthy Nails Between Manicures

How to keep nails strong and the finish looking fresh in the weeks between appointments.

Nail health is mostly about small daily habits rather than the polish you choose.

Moisturise the cuticle, not just the hands

Cuticle oil morning and evening keeps the skin supple and stops hangnails forming round the edges of the nail.

Wear gloves for cleaning

Detergent and hot water strip the natural oils that keep nails flexible. Rubber gloves for washing up make a visible difference within a couple of weeks.

File in one direction

Sawing back and forth weakens the free edge. File gently in one direction with a fine grit, and keep nails a comfortable short length if they tend to peel.

Give them a rest

Leave polish off for a few days between sets so the nail plate can breathe and you can spot any changes early.

If a nail lifts, splits or the skin around it becomes sore, mention it at your next appointment rather than covering it up.
