Balayage Versus Highlights: Which Is Right for You?
4 November 2026

Both lighten your hair, but they grow out, cost and suit very different routines. Here is the simple difference.
Both techniques add lightness, yet they are painted and maintained in completely different ways.
Balayage
Colour is hand painted onto the surface of the hair, usually starting a little away from the roots. The result is a soft, sun-kissed gradient with no hard regrowth line, which means you can go months between appointments. It suits people who want low maintenance and a natural finish.
Highlights
Highlights are taken in fine sections from the root, creating even brightness all over or concentrated in a specific area. They give more lift and more contrast, and they need a visit every six to ten weeks to keep the roots looking intentional.
If you are not sure, bring a photo to your consultation. We look at your natural depth, how often you are willing to come in, and how much time you spend styling, then choose the approach that fits your life rather than the other way around.
